National Privacy Principles


Family First Credit Union complies with the Privacy Act 1988 and amendments to the National Privacy Principles (NPP’s) effective 21 December, 2001. The Management, Directors and Staff of Family First Credit Union are committed and responsible for ensuring the protection and adherence of your Privacy and the NPP’s.

The following statement has been prepared to explain how we collect, use, distribute and store your personal information. It also provides an overview of your rights and our obligations under the NPP’s and explains how you can access your personal information.

How do we… collect your personal information


Generally, personal information collected about you will only be collected from you, unless it is not reasonable or practical to do so and you consent otherwise. (For example a Loan application would require a Credit Reference Check).

Personal information is collected from you in a number of ways during the course of our relationship with you ie, Membership application, Loan application, change of address, application for Insurance etc.

What… information do we hold


The type of information we hold is necessary in our relationship with you, in enabling us to improve our relationship and conduct our business with you. The information we hold would be necessary, but will depend on the product or service you request, generally we hold the following type of information:
  • Information that identifies you and includes, your name, address, contact details, e-mail address, date of birth, tax file number, etc.
  • Information provided for an application for credit.
  • Information relating to applications for insurance.
  • Account transaction information.

How is your… information held and how… secure is your information


Your information is retained and secured in the following ways:
  • Computer Operating Systems
  • Manual Filing System
  • Electronic Filing Machine
Your information may only be accessed by authorised Family First Credit Union employees or persons who perform services on our behalf. We will not retain your information for any longer than it is required by us, except to fulfil our legal obligations.

As a guide, the law generally requires us to retain account information for seven years after an account is closed, however, we may retain some information for longer or shorter periods, depending on our business needs and specific legal requirements.

How your…… information is used


Your information is generally used for the purpose for which it is collected. In addition, we may use this information for other related purposes such as:
  • To tell you about other products and services that may benefit you.
  • Manage your membership with the Credit Union.
  • To enable the Credit Union to fulfil our legal requirements (for example, disclosure to law enforcement agencies).

Who do we… disclose your information to


We have agreements with external service providers (who may be located interstate and overseas) who provide specialised services to the Credit Union. Your information may be disclosed to these external service providers to enable them to perform certain functions or operations for us with your consent. A condition of these agreements is that your information is protected with the same standard of care provided by the Credit Union and your information cannot be provided to any other parties under our agreements with such service providers.

You have… access to your information


You can request access to most of the personal information we hold about you by completing our Privacy Information Request form which is available at all of our branches, your request will then be referred to our Privacy Officer. Your requested information will be provided within 14 days, however more time may be required in some circumstances, if this applies you will be advised as to the time frame for provision of your information.

There may be a fee for the provision of this information and if a fee applies we will inform you of the cost before we act upon your request.

The right to access your information may be subject to some exceptions, for example, you may not obtain access to information relating to existing or anticipated legal proceedings.

If you believe that there should be a… correction of information


We are committed to the protection of your privacy and our Privacy Policy and procedures have been developed with this intention. Our aim is to ensure that the information we hold about you is accurate and to ensure this, you are requested to advise us of any changes to your information in a prompt manner. If any of the information we hold about you is incorrect you are asked to inform us of our error(s) as soon as possible to enable us to correct your information.

Do you wish to receive… information about products and services


During the course of our relationship with you we may wish to advise or offer you information on products and services from us or from our associated service providers, that may be relevant and of interest to you.

If you do not wish to receive this material you have the right at anytime to opt out of receiving such. To do this you will need to contact us on 1300 369 900 or by calling into any branch of Family First Credit Union and completing the Direct Marketing Form.

If you have a complaint… dispute resolution


Family First Credit Union has a dispute resolution procedure and if you have a complaint regarding your Privacy, please let us know and it will be referred to our Privacy Officer. If we are unable to resolve a complaint to your satisfaction you may refer your complaint to the Privacy Commissioner’s Office.
